The “In-Between” Day

So….   I wonder what it was like in Jerusalem on this day…. On this day, 2000 years ago….

This in-between day….  The day between Jesus’ death and Jesus’ resurrection….

I know it was the Sabbath day for the Jews…  And I wonder… did they just have Sabbath worship at the temple in Jerusalem like they always did?  They had just witnessed, the day before, Jesus being crucified on the cross…  the same Jesus that many of them had probably welcomed into the city just a week before, with shouts of “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”…   The same Jesus that those who had then, just a few days later, shouted, “Crucify him!  Crucify him!”…

These people…did they just go to temple then on the Sabbath, the day after Jesus’ crucifixion, and worship God as though nothing had happened?  Could they have forgotten about Jesus and his teachings and his healings, and his raising of Lazarus from the dead, and his own death (that so many had called for) so quickly?

The scriptural accounts of this time found in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, do not say much of anything when it comes to this in-between day…

In fact, the people at that time, on that day in Jerusalem, did not even know it was an “in-between” day…because they had no idea about what was to happen the next day…they did not know what was coming…

How did they feel?

Were they disappointed?  Scared?  Sad?  Angry?  Resigned?  Were they in shock and disbelief?

Were the religious leaders relieved, and did they feel vindicated?  Did they feel blessed by God?

What did they do on this “in-between” day?

Did they just go on about life as they would have if Jesus had never lived and walked among them and taught them and healed them?  Did they just go to temple and worship God, as if nothing had happened (it was the Sabbath after all)?  As if God himself had not just died on the cross the day before?

Ahhh…   but they did not know it was an in-between day…  they were not waiting for anything more…  Jesus had died…  Jesus’ followers were perhaps beginning to doubt all that they had begun to believe about Jesus…  they still didn’t know or understand…  they did not have a clue…

But we, who live now, 2000 years after these events, we know today was an in-between day, and we know what happened tomorrow…  we know what was coming, and what has come!!

But for now, it is just an in-between day, as we wait for the people of 2000 years ago to discover what we now know…

As we wait for tomorrow…

How Often?

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

[Luke 14:16-20 NIV]

I read this passage tonight…  This is not the entire account of the parable that Jesus told of “The Great Banquet” [Luke 14:15-24]…  But these verses from that parable suddenly struck me…and made me make this observation, and ask this question…

God invites all of us to feast with Him… every day we are all invited… we are invited to “feast” with God through reading the Bible…  we are invited to “feast” with God as we come into God’s Presence through prayer…   How often do we…how often do I…find some excuse to not join God’s “feast”?

I can only answer for myself…

And unfortunately, my answer is… too often…
